The Broken Column, 1944. (Frida Kahlo)
This painted changed the way I perceived Art, in my years in high school I was lucky to met a person that knew a lot about her life and legacy, she made me be more analytical about her work and once I knew more about her life it was easier to understand the CONTENT of her work. this paint represents the pain and horror of surgical intervention, she spent a big amount of her life in hospitals, and use EXPRESSIONISM as therapy while in bed. (At first she had painted herself completely nude, but after deciding that it was to distracting she added what it looks like a hospital sheet)

Many years ago I had the chance to visit the Frida Kahlo house in Mexico. It is a museum of her work, but it is set in her own house. I remember being struck by how much pain she had to endure and how it was reflected in her work. I was also struck by the purple walls of her house. SHe painted on all the surfaces of her house! I also visited the works of Diego Rivera, her lover. It was a very powerful trip.

This is a beautiful painting with such a deep pain. I love how it was illistrated and the symbolism behind the nails and the column. I have actually never seen this picture before, I really enjoy it. Thank you for sharing it with me.

What an amazing self-expression of pain and loss in this portrait! And to have discovered this in high school and to have met someone who helped you on your artistic journey is wonderful.
